The city was named when Syed Karimuddin, UN agency is believed to be its founder. The district lies roughly between the latitudes 17° 50′ and 19° 05’N and longitudes 78° 29′ and 80° 22’E.Karimnagar district is delimited by Madhya Pradesh State within the east, Nizamabad district within the West, Warangal and Medak districts within the South and Adilabad district within the North directions.

The district has population of thirty seven,76,269 as per the 2011 census that accounts for ten.73% of the entire population of the State with eight.15% decadal growth. several giant scale corporations like NTPC, Kesoram Cements, Ramagundam-singareni collieries etc. square measure settled in and around Karimnagar.
